Medical Travel Reimbursement Under FECA
20 § 10.315 provides that a claimant under FECA is entitled to reimbursement of reasonable and necessary expenses, including transportation, needed to obtain authorized medical services, appliances, or supplies. To determine what is a reasonable distance to travel, OWCP will consider the availability of services, the employee’s condition, and the means of transportation. Generally, 25-50 miles from the claimant’s home or worksite is considered a reasonable distance to travel. However, OWCP will reimburse for longer trips if necessary.
For approved claims under 100 miles round trip:
- It is OK to file for reimbursement after the office visit.
- Fill out and submit Form OWCP-957 Medical Travel Refund Request
For approved claims that are over 100 miles round trip:
- It is best to get pre-approval.
- Complete DFEC Travel Authorization Request and submit it as instructed.
